Hypnotherapy and Substance Addictions.
There are many, many, reasons
why people become addicted, whether it is to cannabis, alcohol, cocaine, heroin
or any of the different drugs which are frequently misused. Very rarely
is it the case that the body is physiologically dependent on the drug.
The organ most commonly involved is the brain!
We use drugs either to escape the pain,
disappointments, and guilt in our lives, or to give us the confidence we lack
in social situations. Sometimes too, peer pressure – the need to be one
of the crowd – plays a great part in addictive behaviour. Often, too, the
client despairingly believes that he or she cannot overcome their problem – and
nothing could be further from the truth.
Why? Because any
behaviour pattern can be changed! We all have it within us to make the
changes we want to make – but sometimes we need some help to do it
The treatment of addictions using
hyponotherapy is based on a four-point model as follows:
·
Deep hypnosis reduces
physical cravings
·
Psychotherapy (usually
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and hypnotherapy used together tackle the
sometimes deep seated psychological reasons behind the addiction.
·
Motivational counselling
increases the will of the client to succeed
·
Relaxation response and stress
management techniques based on self hypnosis provide the client with the
tools to help to minimise psychological dependency.
